Summary

Git is a distributed version control system (VCS) and is definitely the most used source code management (SCM) tool today.

Commands I use:

When not using Atom :)

• git clone git@github.com:REPO-OWNER/REPO-NAME.git
  • really useful for the initial pulldown of a codebase
• git fetch --all && git reset --hard origin/master
  • really useful for bringing a local repo up to date with the master/main
• git fetch -- download objects and refs from another repository
• git merge -- join two or more development histories together
• git pull -- fetch from and merge with another repository or local branch
• git reset -- reset current HEAD to specified state
• git init -- create empty git repository or re-initialize an existing one
• git push -- update remote refs along with associated objects
• git log -- show commit logs
• git status -- show working-tree status
• git add -- add file contents to index
• git commit -m 'commit message' -- commit the added files
• git config -- get and set repository or global option
• git config --global user.name Tyrel -- set username
• git config --global user.email tyrel@tyrel.cloud -- set email
• git config user.name -- check username
• git config user.email -- check email
